Ashan, To Return To

(Inner Islands, 2012)

"To All That Is".

Oh my goodness! That is the first thing I could tell back in the first time I listened to this album, a few months ago. Having now finally spent the time that it deserved, I'm just beginning to understand that reaction, because it has grown and continues to grow as the warm waves breathed out by this music.

From the beautiful cover as a floral tapestry, from the strongly evocative title, so typical of this year (thinking of "Return" by Daniel Higgs in The Measure of Mystery), from the bell sounding at the beginning in the middle of silence as if were announcing a meditation session, everything here is set for an ode to love, beauty and spirit. And that's the perfume emanated from this entire album: love, peace, beauty, spirit, gratitude, happiness. It's an invitation to live from your heart, open to all, from the inside -exactly what is most needed nowadays, what always has been needed but today more urgently than ever. I think the music of Ashan vibrates at that spiritual frequency both in form and content, music and lyrics, which despite being very brief come intensely straight to your heart. That important and deep it is.

It's no possible for me to choose a favourite song because all four are stunning. All of them explore shiny guitar tunes, along with several acoustic instruments, using repetition to create a mantra effect, all in a folk frame, very melodic and maybe near to gospel, although you can feel it sometimes as drone. I get the feeling that music in each of the songs sounds exactly like what the lyrics are telling. "Energy Garden", the longest, introduces you into the session, inviting you to open your heart and celebrate life. "Gentle Magick" follows in a near field talking about return and learning to trust and love. "How Sweetly I Am Loved", the title says it all, the song is a delight and joy to the heart. And then we come to the part that makes me shiver. "To All That Is". No words for what this song makes me feel. It's really moving. As soon as the flute enters I melt, then the song takes me deeper to the real inside. The lyrics, once again, are brief but strongly touching and spiritual, straight to your heart indeed, talk about gratitude to all, and about faith in the love in which we are hold. And that's exactly what the sounds transmit to me.

Right now this is the most beautiful album of the year, a gift and a glimmer of hope, and it proves that the things spoken by Ashan are there moving and emerging to transform art and reality. It's a gorgeous work of art, because of both content and sounds, being the one a mirror to the other, so perfect is the fit between spirit and form. Please listen to this wonder. To the author, thanks for sharing your light.
